Science and Invention Expo

During the month of May, the Eden Lions club will be hosting its first Science and Invention Expo, which promises to be the first of a landmark event involving schools throughout the Garden Route and further afield. The historical Outeniqua Railway Museum is the perfect setting to host this prestigious event.

The Expo is open to Primary and High School learners. With schools now following the CAPS programme, the Western Cape Education Department is fully supportive of the Expo, as it perfectly complements the National Curriculum Statements for Science and Technology. Entries from home-schooled learners are also welcome.

Primary and High School teachers can use the CAPS programme to integrate any science or technology project, investigation or experiment as an entry into the Science and Invention Expo.
Schools are encouraged to submit individual and/or paired entries in various categories, which includes, but is not limited to : Inventions; Technology; Chemistry; Transportation and Energy; Environmental Sciences; Micro-Biology; Physics and Astronomy as well as a “Go Green” themed category.

The INVENTIONS category will not be restricted to school-aged children - any interested parties of any ages are welcome to enter. A single prize relating to patenting and promotion of the invention will be awarded to the winner of this category.

The Expo will run over 3 days (Thursday to Saturday) to allow for school groups to enjoy the presentations and entries on display, as well as for the community to visit the stands. Saturday 18 May will be buzzing with activities throughout the day with public participation challenges, informative talks and presentations and some great food and drinks stalls.

The duration of the Expo will see many sideline contests for audience participation, such as:

Who can build the strongest bridge with limited and supplied resources?
Who can make the tallest stack of cans with a maximum base number?
Can you blast a coke bottle into the area using only chemical reactions?

With the backing of corporate sponsor PetroSA and various other partners, this event is sure to become one of the top Science and Invention Expos in south Africa.

Entries will be divided into two age groups: Primary and High School. Awards will be made to the top entries in each category of the Expo, as well as many spot prizes throughout the competition.
We invite all schools to be a part of this exciting educational event that will give learners and schools a platform to showcase their talents and skills.
